Brent and Sheree McIntyre
Farm/Stud location:
Macca Lodge - Riversdale.
Farm size:
600 acres.
How did you get started in breeding?
I borrowed a mare from my mother and bred to Transport Chip. The resulting filly (Transzan) didn't race due to injury. I bred from her and got Just Jazzan and away we went.
What is the name of your first broodmare:
Hi There.
Editor's note: Hi There was by Hi Foyle out of Kotahi. She left moderate performers in Belvedere (1 win), I'm There (1 win) and Sally Holm (1 win). It was from one of her unraced foals, Transzan that the McIntyre's started breeding. The Transport Chip mare only left two foals - Just Jazzan (Knowing Bret) and an unraced Tuff Choice colt, before she died in 1992.
Is the priority to breed your horses for racing or to sell at the sales?
Both.
What do you consider to be the best horse you've bred and raced?
Bonnie Lass (Camtastic - Just Jazzan) 70-10-10-13 $87,994 and 1-56.2 placed.
Best priced yearling sold away from the sales?
Suzie Blue (Washington VC - Ginny Dale ) 27-3-2-1.
Best priced yearling sold at sale?
Macardo (McArdle-Jamie)
Editor's note: Macardo was the McIntyre's first venture to the national yearling sales. The McArdle colt was sold for $33,000 to PJ Cates and Mrs J Cates.
What new season sires are you most excited about?
Panspacificflight - Because we are standing him (frozen semen). He's well bred and well performed and is on the Top 10 stallion list on money won and averages. And he's on the USA 2 year old list. Not bad for a first season sire.
How important do you feel it is to breed to a stallion that will possibly leave two year olds?
Very important. Quicker turnaround - that's where the money is.
How important do you feel research is in choosing a stallion for your mares?
Extremely. What suits your mare on type and breeding.
How important is the stallion's size?
Not really. I've seen big stallions leave average size horses. As long as they can run!
Do you prefer to see your stallion choices in the flesh?
Not necessary with videos etc.
As a professional breeder, how often do you buy outside mares to broaden your breeding stock?
Just started. Buying the odd mare.
What current New Zealand breed would you most likely buy into?
Blackwatch family. One of the best families in the stud book.
What feeding plan do you follow when rearing your foals?
Feed plenty of crushed barley with Hanley's Amino products, mineral salts and garlic plus lucerne, balage plus quality pasture.
If you breed primarily pacers, would you ever consider breeding trotters?
Possibly.
What do you most enjoy about breeding horses?
It's a passion. You look forward to see what they break in like, whether they can run and manners etc. Then the dream begins and you hope it doesn't turn into a nightmare.
What do you consider to be the most challenging aspect about breeding horses today?
Picking the right stallion that is going to be 'flavour of the month' at the sales. It only takes one negative comment from one trainer and all the progeny from that stallion are tarred with the same brush.
