Tony Barron with Peter Marshall

Farm/Stud location:

All of the partnership mares graze at Macca Lodge.

How did you get started in breeding?

Bred a trotting mare (Pride Of Pomona) with Dad (Ron Barron).

What is the name of your first broodmare:

Pride Of Pomona.

Is the priority to breed your horses for racing or to sell at the sales?

Both.

What do you consider was the best horse you've bred and raced?

Shadow Conspiracy (Gee Whiz 11 - Pride Of Pomona) 25-5-2-4 $19,783

Best priced yearling sold away from the sales?

Lively Medley (18 West Australian wins)

Highest priced colt bred and sold?

Pete's Reward $30,000

Favourite stallion?

Holmes Hanover

What new season sires are you most excited about?

Changeover - Nevele R - Great horse from the Direct Scooter line.

How important do you feel it is to breed to a stallion that will possibly leave two year olds?

Very important. Our best two year olds are usually our best horses.

How important do you feel research is in choosing a stallion for your mares?

A small percentage. I believe a good stallion matched with a good mare will produce a good horse.

How important is the stallion's size?

Depends on the type of mare. I don't send a small mare to a small stallion.

Do you prefer to see your stallion choices in the flesh?

Yes.

As a professional breeder, how often do you buy outside mares to broaden your breeding stock?

Each year.

What feeding plan do you follow went rearing your foals?

Feed them as much as they can eat. Bailage, lucerne, oats, sweetfeed, chaff and milkpowder.

If you breed primarily pacers, would you ever consider breeding trotters?

Dad and I have two left out of Pride Of Pomona.

What current New Zealand breed would you most like to buy into?

Roanne's family. It's full of black type right back to the 5th dam.

What do you most enjoy about breeding horses?

Love watching the foals grow and develop and then go on and win races.

What do you consider to be the most challenging aspect about breeding horses today?

The cost of breeding in relation to stake money.
