Who has had the biggest influence on your career to date?

Bruce Negus. He gave me plenty of drives at the start of my career.

First winner ands how did it feel?

Dark Shadow. Ecstatic.

Editor's note: The Il Vicolo gelding won for Shane at Timaru in November 2004. He was 9/9 in the betting. The horse ended up winning 11 races from 109 starts before being exported to Australia.

Biggest race you've won as a driver?
The New Zealand Dominion Handicap.

Editor's note: Walkinshaw won the Group One event in 2006 driving Whatsundermykilt. The Sundon gelding beat the Phil Williamson trained pair One Over Kenny and Jasmyn's Gift. Shane won three races on Whatsundermykilt in New Zealand and also drove him to win a heat of the Interdominions in 2007 at Globe Derby. He finished third in the final. In nine drives on the trotter in Australia he won once, was second four times and third twice.

Best mare driven?

Special Ops.

Editor's note: Shane drove the Armbro Operative mare to win four races. She finished third in the 2009 Ascot Park Hotel Invercargill Cup.

New Zealand Cup. Always wanted to.

What Southland race would you most like to win and why?

Kindergarten Stakes. Nice two year olds normally win it. 

Which New Zealand driver do you most admire?

Ricky May. He has helped me a lot since I started and is a great driver.

What do you consider to be the biggest challenge facing harness racing in Southland?

Keeping good stakes
