No real reason. Just what was available at the time.

Name your first winner - how did it feel?

Josie Queen. It was a long time ago but I'm guessing I was pretty rapt.

Editors note: Josie Queen won at Wyndham in November 1984. The eight year old Nandina Joe mare was 14/14 in the betting and paid $87.70 and $20.45. McLellan was training at Hedgehope at the time from Maurice Skinner's stable.

Biggest race you've won as a trainer:

The New Zealand Oaks with Shania Patron.

Editor's note: Shania Patron won the New Zealand Oaks in 2001. As a two year old she won the 2000 Sire Stakes Fillies Championship (Group Two) at Addington in May 2000 beating Tiger Turner and English Elegance. She also won the 2000 Sires Stakes Final for three year olds at Alexandra Park in December 2000, rating over a mile in 1-56.4. She raced 35 times to win seven races and $178,330.

Editors note: It's Ella started and finished her 53 start career as a winner. Her first win was in February 2005 while her last was in the Group Two Caduceus Club of Canterbury Premier Mares Championship in January 2008. Her time for the 1950 metres was 2-21.1 a mile rate of 1-56.4. Her biggest win was in the PGG Wrightson New Zealand Breeders Stakes in 2007.

Editors note: McLellan trained Happy Patron for 31 of his 42 lifetime starts in New Zealand with Terry May training him for his other starts. His biggest career win was in the 1986 John Brandon Flying Stakes at Addington when he beat Alba's Reign. A week later he ran third in the New Zealand Derby behind Alba's Reign and Trident.
